~ Spectacular Jupiter & Venus Conjunction 28th August 2016~

~ Spectacular Jupiter & Venus Conjunction ~

The western sky looked spectacular this evening with Venus and Jupiter making a beautiful close conjunction in the evening sky. The sky was so clear you could even see a couple of the moons of Jupiter around the planet.
The star close to Jupiter is Beta Virginis (Zavijava) in Virgo, it’s very close to the ecliptic and is often very near to the Moon or planets and is often occulted by them.

We are away camping at the moment inland at Rathdowney in QLD and had to work my way around a lot of trees and campfires to capture an image…but I did it :-)

Image taken with a Canon 70D camera and a Canon 100-400mm lens set at 190mm, exposure time was 1.3 seconds and ISO 4000.

~ See Amazing Saturn at O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat ~
Saturday 10th September – Sunday 11th September 2016
I’ll be giving talks on this incredible mission to Saturn by the Cassini Spacecraft and showing everyone the real planet Saturn in the night sky with my large telescope.

Every year I’m invited to this beautiful world heritage nature resort to give astronomy and space presentations to their guests and visitors, where we all have a wonderful time viewing the wonders of the universe…so please come along and join us.  https://oreillys.com.au

~ Stunning Planetary Alignments in August 2016 ~

8/10/2016

All through the month of August there will be these beautiful alignments (conjunctions) in the western sky with the planets Jupiter, Mercury and Venus…you must go outside and try and capture the event.

All you need is your camera and appropriate lens on a tripod and just a fraction of a second exposure…if you don’t have a tripod rest your camera on a solid surface and put the camera’s timer on so you don’t touch the camera while the photos taken.

The best time to take the images is when there’s still some light in the sky, preferably when there’s still some sunset colours so it makes a pretty picture.
Good luck :-)

This is the whole view of the western sky when the crescent Moon joined Jupiter, Mercury and Venus…it’s not very often that you can capture the planet Mercury especially with it being positioned above Venus in the sky.

The western sky looked so pretty on the 6th August with a new crescent Moon making a lovely conjunction with Jupiter, the sky was so clear that you could capture the three moons of Jupiter around the planet with just a camera and lens on a tripod.

Topic – What may an alien from another planet look like?

Our little Stardust junior astronomers had lots of fun at the library today learning all about what an alien may look like from another planet.

I’m really impressed by some of their drawings, as you can see a lot of their aliens were very happy to meet us earthlings :-)
